Hey everyone, welcome back. I’m Doctor Bob Vaughn from Catalyst Chiropractic and Rehab here in Blaine, and today we’re talking about something I genuinely get excited about — daily mobility exercises. Now, I know that might not sound thrilling at first, but stay with me here. Because what I’m really talking about is feeling good in your body every single day. Moving without stiffness. Getting up off the floor without that little grunt. Bending down to tie your shoes without holding your breath. That stuff matters, and it’s more within your control than you might think.
So let’s dive in.
Here’s something I hear almost every week in my office. Someone sits down and says, “Doctor Vaughn, I don’t know what happened. I just woke up and my back was killing me.” And I always say the same thing — it didn’t just happen overnight. What we feel today is usually the result of what we’ve been doing, or not doing, for weeks or months. Stiffness and pain have a way of building up quietly, and then one morning, taking out the trash becomes the thing that breaks the camel’s back.
The good news? Mobility work is one of the most powerful ways to push back against that process.
Now, let me break down what mobility actually means, because people mix it up with flexibility. Flexibility is about how far a muscle can stretch. Mobility is about how well your joints move through their full range of motion — with control. Think of it this way. A rubber band stretches. But a healthy joint moves, loads, and stabilizes. That’s mobility. And it’s something we can train every single day without a gym membership or fancy equipment.
Here are a few simple movements I recommend to almost everyone. The first is the hip circle. Stand with your feet shoulder width apart, put your hands on your hips, and slowly make big circles with your hips — like you’re drawing a circle with your waist. Ten times one direction, ten times the other. Your hips carry a tremendous amount of your daily load, and most of us sit for hours and hours, which tightens everything up. This one movement wakes those joints right back up.
The second is the thoracic rotation stretch. Sit on the edge of a chair, cross your arms over your chest, and slowly rotate your upper body to the left, then to the right. Nice and controlled. Your mid-back — what we call the thoracic spine — is supposed to rotate quite a bit. When it stops doing its job, your lower back and neck try to compensate. And that’s when we start seeing problems.
The third is the chin tuck. This one looks simple, but it is incredibly effective. Sitting or standing tall, gently pull your chin straight back — like you’re trying to make a double chin. Hold for three seconds, then release. Do that ten times. This retrains the deep muscles in your neck that tend to get weak and stretched out from hours of looking at screens.
Now, here’s the key thing about all of these. Slow and controlled wins every time. You’re not trying to break a sweat. You’re trying to remind your body how to move the way it was designed to. Spend just five to ten minutes in the morning on these, and over time, you will absolutely notice a difference in how you feel throughout the day.
One more thing I want you to keep in mind — consistency beats intensity every single time when it comes to mobility. Doing a little bit every day is far more valuable than doing a big workout once a week. Your joints thrive on regular, gentle movement. Think of it like brushing your teeth. You don’t deep clean once a month and hope for the best. You do a little every day, and it keeps things healthy.
Now, if you’ve been dealing with pain, stiffness, or limited movement that isn’t improving on its own — please come in and see us. Because sometimes there’s an underlying issue with joint alignment or muscle function that’s actually blocking your progress, and that’s exactly what we’re here to help you sort out. A few adjustments and some targeted rehab work can make those mobility exercises even more effective.
