Hey everyone, welcome back. I’m Doctor Bob Vaughn from Catalyst Chiropractic and Rehab here in Blaine, Minnesota — and today we’re talking about something that affects every single one of you listening right now. Your sleep setup. Specifically, your mattress and your pillow — and why they might be the hidden reason you’re waking up stiff, sore, or just plain exhausted.
Now, here’s the thing. A lot of people come into my office with neck pain, low back pain, headaches — and they’ve already tried stretching, they’ve already tried different chairs at work, they’ve done everything right during the day. But nobody has asked them what’s happening for those seven or eight hours they’re in bed. And that’s where we need to start looking.
Let me break this down for you. When you sleep, your spine needs to be in what we call a neutral position. That just means your spine has its natural curves — and those curves are being supported, not fighting against gravity all night long. When your mattress is too soft, your hips sink down, your low back rounds out, and those muscles and joints are under stress for hours. When it’s too firm, you get these pressure points at your hips and shoulders that cause you to tense up without even knowing it. Either way, you wake up feeling like you went a few rounds instead of getting rest.
Here’s what’s interesting — your mattress doesn’t have to be ancient to cause problems. A mattress that’s only five or six years old can lose significant support, especially if it has visible sagging or you notice a body impression in it. If you roll toward the middle when you lay down, that’s a pretty good sign the support is gone.
Now let’s talk about pillows, because honestly — I think pillows cause even more problems than people realize. Your pillow has one job. To keep your head and neck in line with the rest of your spine while you sleep. That’s it. But when your pillow is too thick, your neck gets pushed up and bent sideways all night. When it’s too flat, your head drops and your neck is cranked the other direction. Both of those create muscle tension, joint stress, and yes — that classic stiff neck in the morning that just won’t quit.
Your pillow choice also depends a lot on how you sleep. Side sleepers generally need a thicker, firmer pillow to fill the space between your shoulder and your head. Back sleepers do better with something a little thinner that keeps the head from jutting forward. And stomach sleepers — I have to be honest with you — that’s the position that puts the most stress on your neck and low back. If you’re a stomach sleeper, try to break that habit if you can.
So what can you do starting today? First, do a simple check. Lay on your bed and have someone look at you from the side or take a photo. Is your spine in a relatively straight line? Or is your head way up or way down? That visual can tell you a lot. Second, if your mattress is more than seven to ten years old and you’re waking up in pain, it’s worth a conversation about replacing it. You don’t have to spend a fortune — a medium-firm mattress works well for most people. Third, consider trying a cervical pillow or a contoured pillow designed for spinal support. Many of my patients notice a difference within just a few nights.
And here’s when you should come see us. If you’ve already made adjustments to your sleep setup and you’re still waking up with pain and stiffness — or if the pain is lingering into your afternoon and affecting your day — that’s your sign. That discomfort is telling you something. We can evaluate your spine, find where the tension and restriction are coming from, and put together a plan to actually get you feeling better. Sometimes the mattress is part of the problem, but the joints and muscles need some help recovering too.
You know, you spend about a third of your life in bed. That’s not a small thing. Your sleep environment is just as important as your work setup, your exercise routine, any of it. And you deserve to wake up feeling rested and ready to go.
